Neither at home nor at school are students taught how to deal with stress in healthy ways. How We Work

All SKY Campus Happiness programming is tailored to suit the interests and goals of the sponsoring university. We design and deliver custom offerings in partnership with university departments, bodies and student clubs.

SKY Campus Happiness Speaker Events are two-hour interactive programs that provide participants with knowledge and practical techniques for health, happiness, social connection, stress management and resilience. They can be offered as one-time events, weekly, or monthly events. All speaker events include breathing techniques, guided meditation and practical tools for self-development and greater self-awareness. Speaker event topics are developed in partnership with the sponsoring university. Sample topics include: Happiness and Productivity, Service and Social Change, Mind and Meditation, Success without Stress.

SKY Campus Happiness Retreat is an innovative and experiential life-skills training program that empowers participants to develop a relaxed, stress-free mind and an energetic, healthy body, using the powerful tools of meditation, yoga, breathing techniques and self-exploration. This 20-hour interactive program provides students with knowledge and practical techniques for stress management and resilience, soft skills leadership training, strategies for social connection and an opportunity to engage in peer driven service initiatives. Workshops are scheduled and produced in partnership with the sponsoring university

SKY Campus Happiness Fellowship Program develops student leaders through advanced skill-building, regular practice of SKY techniques, and assistance of  SKY Campus Happiness trainers. Fellowship students organize student-led activities like: substance-free parties, alternative winter and spring breaks, and meditation/happiness campaigns. As they integrate skills and perspectives on health and wellbeing, social connection, leadership and service, these student leaders can be a resource to university department and can help design and support other related campus initiatives

YES! for Schools is dedicated to providing youth with a healthy body, a healthy mind and a healthy lifestyle. We do this by offering youth practical tools and life skills to manage stress and emotions. When students learn how to manage their stress in a healthy way, they exhibit greater confidence and motivation to succeed in school and make healthy choices when faced with life’s challenges.

Young people face emotional issues such as low self-esteem, depression and anxiety that are a source of great stress, which inhibits learning. Without a healthy alternative, students often turn to unhealthy strategies to cope with these problems including: smoking, alcohol or drugs, aggression and violence, and withdrawal from social interaction. As students learn to reduce stress and manage emotions they gain the ability to focus and perform well academically at school, as well as the ability to build more positive relationships with their peers, parents and teachers.

Healthy Body

The Healthy Body module encourages physical fitness and healthy food choices through:

  • Physical activity that includes exercise to stretch and strengthen the body
  • Experiential processes that encourage mindful eating

How Does it Work?

Research shows that breathing and emotional states are tightly coupled processes that greatly influence each other. Emotional states change the quality and patterns of respiration. In turn, respiration patterns can alter the emotional state.

SKY Meditation is distinct because it uses specific patterns of breath to automatically settle the mind into deep meditation without any mental effort, concentration or observation. Its effects have been studied in open and randomized trials, both in healthy populations and in populations with psychopathology. Prison SMART

Prison SMART (Stress Management and Rehabilitation Training) teaches prisoners how to manage their stress, aggression, and trauma, building a foundation for a new life.

The Prison S.M.A.R.T. objective is to make a life-transforming difference in the lives of all people within the criminal justice system, by teaching skills for reducing stress, healing trauma, and providing practical knowledge of how to handle one’s emotions, live to one’s highest potential and contribute to society.

Prison S.M.A.R.T. aims to reduce offender recidivism and end the repeated cycle of violence and abuse. Without tools to process past trauma and present stresses, incarcerated individuals often cope with their negative emotions such as anger, guilt, mistrust, and frustration with unhealthy behaviors and attitudes- including violence, addiction, apathy or lethargy. The Prison S.M.A.R.T. program offers practical methods for participants to transform these negative emotions for true rehabilitation, and develop the core human values innate in all human beings, such as service to others and compassion.

Disaster & Trauma Relief Initiatives

Disaster and Trauma Relief mobilizes global volunteers to provide immediate aid and care, trauma relief, and long-term community development post disaster.

 

In response to natural and manmade disasters, IAHV collects funds and goods for immediate material aid and care, provides and supports trauma relief and stress-management programs, and supports long-term rehabilitation.

Immediate Material Aid and Service

IAHV US collects funds and goods to support emergency services and material aid in the aftermath of disasters provided by other IAHV country organizations and its partner organization, the Art of Living Foundation. These emergency services provide food, clothes, medicine and shelter. Doctors, counsellors and other physical and mental health experts form an integral part of such immediate relief efforts.

Trauma Relief

For survivors of disasters, who have experienced severe physical and emotional trauma, material help alone is not sufficient. Alleviating the trauma and helping people to reclaim their lives is essential. IAHV’s Trauma Relief programs – the Breath Water Sound Program and the Art of Living Course – teach participants how to process their emotions and stress through the breath, to shift their attention away from reliving the past towards future possibilities. Participants leave the workshop with stress and trauma management techniques, healthy coping strategies, stronger community bonds and a sense of personal power.

Hurricane Katrina

IAHV trainers from around the US initiated Trauma Relief Programs starting just days after Hurricane Katrina. Establishing a center in New Orleans for 2 years, IAHV volunteers taught Trauma Relief programs to 2,600 aid workers, children, and adults. During the course of the Hurricane Katrina effort, 161 university students were trained in delivering Breath Water Sound through Youth Leadership Training Program.

Long-term Rehabilitation: Sustainable Community Development

True relief can only happen when disaster survivors are completely rehabilitated – physically and emotionally. To support communities in developing sustainable solutions, IAHV’s global organizations and volunteers work in villages and with local communities, building homes, sanitation systems, roads, schools, vocational training centers and other necessary infrastructure. IAHV-US raises funds to support these ventures, including for the 5H program in India.

RISE: Refugee Integration and Self-Empowerment (RISE)

In the US, IAHV launched the Refugee Integration and Self-Empowerment (RISE) Program in 2009 to assist Bhutanese refugees in Atlanta to handle high levels of trauma and stress. These refugees have faced challenges integrating into their new circumstances in the United States.

RISE offers:

  • Trauma Relief through Breath Water Sound, and Art of Living courses for youth and adults
  • Women’s Job Training and Employment in Home cleaning; jewelry making, knitting and sewing
  • Tutoring and Mentoring
  • Access to Transportation
  • Fundraising for women’s projects

RISE is currently working in:

  • Atlanta – 750 refugees
  • Houston – 50 refugees
  • Austin – 72 refugees
  • Minneapolis – 45 refugees
  • Cleveland – 29 refugees
  • Boston – 41 refugees
  • Boise – 35 refugees

 

Project Welcome Home Troops

According to the Veterans Affairs Administration, veterans filing disability claims for PTS(D) has tripled in the last decade from 345,000 in 2008 to 940,000 in 2017. Veterans of previous conflicts continue to experience symptoms of post-traumatic stress (PTS).  PTS develops as a result of exposure to traumatic event(s) and is characterized by depression, anxiety, anger, hyper-vigilance, sleep disorders, avoidance, night terrors and flashbacks are some of the symptoms.  Many veterans also experience moral injury during their service; when events transgress deeply held moral beliefs and expectations.

 

Traditional treatments for veterans’ PTS are currently insufficient. Many veterans drop out of traditional therapeutic treatments because the process of recounting traumatic events is emotionally taxing. They often fail to continue drug treatments due to the drugs’ side effects. Research is showing that the only FDA approved drugs for PTS (i.e. SSRIs) are not helpful in addressing PTS. A recent study shows that of those veterans who actually undergo an entire course of treatment, only 50% show signs of recovery. There is clearly an urgent need to provide alternate methods of helping returning veterans reclaim their lives.

 

Veterans are self-reliant, independent people. Rather than depending on a drug or therapist, veterans value learning tools which they can use to help themselves. The Power Breath Meditation Workshop allows veterans to regain a sense of self-mastery and control because they learn techniques they can use on their own. Research shows that these programs are effective, safe, prevention-based and free of known side-effects. They can be scaled up to serve large numbers of veterans at a lower cost than many traditional interventions.

 

Project Welcome Home Troop’s Power Breath Meditation workshop transforms lives restoring wellbeing, mental focus and a renewed sense of connection and purpose. Research shows that Veterans and Military Members can get relief from chronic and traumatic stress using our scientifically backed breath-based meditation techniques.  These powerful techniques address the root of the extreme stress of military life including: multiple deployments, traumatic loss and reintegration with family and community.  Our program proudly serves military installations, Veterans Affairs Hospitals, Vet Centers and communities around the United States.
